Mr. Iain Grant
My connection to the University is long and varied. I’m an alumni who’s worked here since 2005, starting as a temp, moving onto my first permanent role at secretarial level, and working my way up to my current position as Head of Strategic Planning. I have a strong attachment to the University and take great pride in its successes. I’m excited about our current trajectory too, even moreso with the publication of Aberdeen2040.
I’m also crystal clear about the fundamental importance of Professional Services and our support functions in underpinning and facilitating our successes as a University community. I believe we are the beating heart of the institution, and I’m proud to have been part of this family for 15 years.
Over this time, I’ve gained a wealth of experience across many roles, and through these, I understand our environment, and the pressures and challenges we face at every level. For example, I have great esteem for staff at secretarial level because I’ve worked there myself. I have great respect for what’s required to organise student registrations and graduations because I’ve been involved in doing both. I understand what staff involved in student recruitment go through managing events like Applicant Days because I’ve had that responsibility. I know what it’s like to represent the University on recruitment stands in countries like Poland, Bulgaria and Estonia because I’ve done that too. I know the outstanding effort and knowledge required to deliver a REF submission because I was heavily involved in our own submission in 2014. I have immense respect for those with the expertise to deliver major capital projects in Digital and Estates, because I’ve worked extensively supporting a number of them.
I’ll stop there, but suffice to say that because of diverse experiences like these, among others, I feel well qualified to be the strong voice required to represent all of Professional Services on Court.
Indeed, as we move through uncharted territory, facing unprecedented challenges arising from Covid-19, we need a strong voice now more than ever, ensuring the challenges we face are understood, the quality we deliver is recognised, and the value we add is rightly seen as indispensable. I’ll be firm in my belief that where possible, investment and growth should underpin recovery, and when I can, I’ll also push my belief that we can do more to develop people, if or where resources permit, so we all have the opportunity to realise our potential; after all, a highly qualified, high-performing Professional Services function is fundamental to driving a successful recovery and a successful University.
Finally, as your representative, I will listen; I’ll be available at any time to hear your opinions and concerns, to ensure I understand the issues that matter to you. You can therefore be assured that if you lend me your vote, you will be heard, and that collectively, Professional Services will have the voice we need, as we face the challenges ahead.
With best wishes
