This is a past event

Earth Hour is a worldwide movement organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

The event is held annually encouraging individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour as a symbol of commitment to the planet.

It was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007. Since then, it has grown to engage more than 7,000 cities and towns across 187 countries and territories. Some websites even take part in the event, with Google's homepage going "dark" on the day.

This year Earth Hour will take place on Saturday 24 March, from 8:30pm to 9:30pm. In support of the event, the University will turn off the lights around Kings College.

Staff are encouraged to help the University create a big impact for Earth Hour by turning off as many electrical appliances as possible before you leave on Friday 23 March. You can help by:

  • Turning off your computer and monitor(s)
  • Turning off your desk lamp
  • Making sure all office lights are off when you leave
  • Unpluging phone/tablet charges
  • Turning off any portable electric heaters

If you or your department are doing anything extra the Energy Team would love to hear about it - you can contact them or send your photos to energyteam@abdn.ac.uk.
