Intelligent machines - humans vs artificial designMachine learning is a complex and rapidly developing field. Recent developments have contributed to the growth of autonomous things such as drones and selfdriving cars, becoming the main driver of innovation in the automotive industry.
Intelligent machines come in two varieties: biological and artificial. The main difference between the two types arises at the level of goals - many of the goals for humans are inbuilt through evolution. The goals for artificial intelligences must be defined by the programmers, which poses unresolved dilemma.This talk will contrast the biological version of intelligent machines (humans) with artificial design, starting with neurons vs transistors and comparing ears and eyes with microphones and cameras before drawing conclusions for autonomous vehicles and other robots.
The talk will finish with some general remarks about machine learning and artificial intelligence and how they will fundamentally restructure a number of major industry sectors, like cars, finance, and the pharma industry.
About the SpeakerDr Hermann Hauser KBE CBE FRS FREng FInstP is the co-founder of Amadeus Capital Partners and has wide experience in developing and financing companies in the information technology sector. He co-founded several high-tech companies, including Acorn Computers, which spun out ARM. In 1997, he co-founded Amadeus Capital Partners, where he has invested in CSR, Solexa, Icera, Xmos,and Cambridge Broadband.
Hermann is a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Institute of Physics, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and of the Royal Academy of Engineering, as well as an Honorary Fellow of King’s College, Cambridge. In 2004, he was made a member of the Government’s Council for Science and Technology and in 2013 he was made a Distinguished Fellow of BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT. In 2015, Dr Hauserwas awarded an KBE for services to Engineering and Industry.
