Morton, Sir William
Biography: Judge and politician. Baptised Worcestershire 1605. Matriculated Trinity College, Oxford 1621, graduated B.A. 1622 and M.A. 1625 from Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Studied Inner Temple 1622, called to the bar 1630. Sheriff of Gloucestershire 1643-4. Knighted 1643. Promoted to lieutenant-colonel Spring 1644 and made head of the garrison of Sudeley Castle. Forced to surrender the castle June 1644, imprisoned in the Tower of London. Returned to Gloucestershire by 1648. Returned to the bar 1659. Serjeant-at-law 1660. Elected to represent Haverfordwest at Parliament 1663. Created king's serjeant 1663, judge of the king's bench 1665. Remembered for his severity towards highwaymen and robbers. Died London 1672.
