Biography: Physician. Born Aberdeen 1724. Son of George Fordyce, provost of Aberdeen. Educated Marischal Coll., served a pupillage with a local practitioner, and with his brother John at Uppingham 1743. Admitted member of the Royal Medical Society, Edinburgh, 1744. Volunteered for the army, obtained appointment as surgeon to the guards. At Turin 1750, returned to London 1750. Set up practice in London. M.D. Cambridge 1770 by royal mandate. Admitted licentiate of the College of Physicians 1786. Fellow of the Royal Society 1787. Knighted 1787. Published A New Inquiry into the Causes, Symptoms, and Cure of Putrid and Inflammatory Fevers 1773. Lord Rector of Marischal Coll. 1790-2. Died London 1792/4 after a long illness. Left his medical library to Marischal Coll. and founded the lectureship on agriculture.
