Biography: Classical scholar and secretary to the Earl of Essex. Born Hinton St George, 1563. Elected a scholar of Trinity Coll., Cambridge 1578, B.A. 1580, elected fellow 1583-6. Forced to resign after calling the college's founder a habitual thief. Fellow of Merton Coll., Oxford 1586, M.A. 1589. Appointed regius professor of Greek Apr 1590-1597. University proctor 1594-5. Joined secretariat of Earl of Essex. Sent on mission to Florence 1597-8, visited Paris twice in 1598. Travelled to Ireland with Essex 1599, dismissed 1600 but soon restored. Arrested for treason after Essex took arms against the Queen 1601, hanged 13 Mar 1601.
