Chalmers, Alex c.1759-c.1834
Biography:
Biographer and literary editor, was born on 29 March 1759 in Aberdeen and baptized that day at St Nicholas's in the city, the youngest son of James Chalmers (1713-1764) printer and publisher. His father founded the Aberdeen Journal, which he edited until his death; his grandfather was the Revd James Chalmers (d. 1744), professor of divinity at Marischal College, Aberdeen. Although he was regarded by some of his contemporaries as a retailer of minutiae and a booksellers' hack, Alexander Chalmers's extensive biographical and bibliographical research has been respected and cited by subsequent generations of students of British literature.
