Aberdeen Church of Scotland Training College, Senior Female Students

Biography: The Training College was founded in 1874, in response to the 1872 Education Act which called for formal training of teachers. It was initially for female students only, but men were admitted from 1887. In 1905, teacher training provision in Scotland was re-organised, and the secular Aberdeen Provincial Training Centre replaced the two church training colleges already in Aberdeen. This later became the Aberdeen College of Education in 1959, and merged with the education college in Dundee in 1987 to become the Northern College of Education. In 2001, it merged with the University of Aberdeen to create the faculty of education.
