Vaus [or Vascus], John

Vaus [or Vascus], John

Biography: Latinist, classical scholar and earliest Scottish writer on grammar. Born at Aberdeen about 1484 or 1490, the son of a priest and an unmarried woman. Vatican records state he was excused of his illegitmacy by the Pope 1503 in order to progress to the priesthood, and confirmed as vicar of Alness 1504. If born c.1584, may have been a student under Hector Boece at Aberdeen 1500-4. Studied at Paris, M.A. 1505, returned 1515-6. Appointed humanist in college of St Mary (afterwards King's College). Succeeded a namesake, Alexander Vascus. Pupil and colleague of Robert Gray. Published commentary on Doctrinale of Alexander de Villa Dei, supervised its printing in Paris. Chaplain to St Nicholas Church, Aberdeen. Succeeded in professorship by Theophilus Stewart. Mentioned in office in 1538, but probably died in that year as Stewart had succeeded by 1539.
