The School of Social Science's Equality & Diversity Committee (EDC) is chaired by the School Equality and Diversity Officers Luisa Gandolfo and Arnar Arnason. It includes representatives from all departments, support staff and postgraduate and undergraduate students. The EDC is working on implementing a range of measures to support and improve equality and diversity in the School. Anyone who would like to discuss issues of equality and diversity in the School is welcome to get in touch.
As part of the University’s commitment to promoting gender equality, the School of Social Science currently holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award. Athena SWAN awards recognize commitment to advancing gender equality in academia, addressing unequal gender representation across academic disciplines, professional and support functions and removing the obstacles faced by women.
You can read our Athena Swan Bronze Award submission.
The Athena SWAN Charter was launched in 2005 by the Equality Challenge Unit to advance the representation of women in science subjects in higher education and research. In May 2015 it was expanded to address broader gender equality issues, and to include arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law, and well as professional and support staff.
What we're working on now...
The EDC recognises that workplace stress is a serious issue that affects both work and home lives. The University has web resources available on mental health and stress, including information on the Occupational Health Service.
Members of staff may be interested in various forms of flexible working arrangements. These include part-time working, flexible working hours, career breaks, and others. Information is available in the University's Flexible Working webpages.
Did you know that School staff on maternity or other forms of parental leave from work can, if they wish, take advantage of Keeping in Touch (KIT) Days? This involves being paid for up to 10 days' work during the leave. Full information on leave is available on the University website.
Upcoming meetings of the EDC are as follows (all 1pm-2pm in Edward Wright F61). If you would like to attend please contact one of the Equality & Diversity Officers, above.
