The John Shivas Young Researchers Fund - PhD Students

The John Shivas Young Researchers Fund - PhD Students

Applications are invited for bursaries from the John Shivas Young Researchers Fund.  Awards of between £250 and £1500 will be awarded for support for PhD studies.

This could be for conference attendance, for visiting another centre to learn a technique, to attend workshops to enhance skills or for other purposes linked to improving the outcome of PhD projects e.g. contribution to publication costs.  The funds are not available for tuition fees or living expenses and must have an academic purpose.

These awards are for students in good standing who do not have an external source of support such as a UKRI studentship or other sponsorship as the Trust wishes to focus its support on students who lack this type of support.

Written applications of no more than two sides of A4 and describing the proposed use of the funds with costings should be submitted by 30 April 2021.  A letter of support from your primary supervisor should also be included. Applications will be scored based on academic excellence, proposed use of the award, how it will enhance students’ PhD studies as well as their personal development.

They should be returned to Karen Slesser, School Postgraduate Manager, k.e.slesser@abdn.ac.uk

Funding decisions will be made by a panel of academic staff led by the School’s PGR Lead.  Decisions will be available by 31 May 2021 and the funding may be spent up to February 2022.  There will be a second tranche of awards next year.

A report on the use of the funds will be expected within one month of completion of the activity.  Students will be asked to provide a photograph or other content that can be used for social media or other promotion on the School Facebook page or other media so as to recognise the generosity of the Trust.

*This funding is made available due to the generosity of the John Shivas Memorial Trust to which an annual report will be made on the use of the funds.
