Through the generosity of the Ledingham Trust, the English programme at the University of Aberdeen is pleased to offer a PhD Studentship, comprising fee waiver and a stipend of £9000 per annum. The studentship is open to home/EU students pursuing research in the fields of English Literature and/or Creative Writing.

The English programme at Aberdeen, founded in 1894, is home to leading specialists in areas including: Scottish and Irish literature from the late medieval period to the present; Early Modern literature, including Shakespeare, Spenser, Milton and Middleton; Victorian literature including James, Eliot, and the Brontës; American literature; Modernism, and Creative Writing; the department also hosts specialists in trauma, memory studies, literature and science, textual editing and book history.  We are home to the Walter Scott Research Centre, The WORD Centre for Creative Writing and a Centre for the Novel as well as the interdisciplinary Centre for Early Modern Studies, the Research Institute for Scottish and Irish Studies, and the Herbert Grierson Centre for Textual Criticism and Comparative Literature.

The University’s new £57 million Sir Duncan Rice Library features state-of-the-art IT and research facilities, as well as a Special Collections Centre for conservation and research. It has outstanding collections including medieval manuscripts, a wide range of early modern printed books, along with rich holdings from the Romantic and Victorian periods, when Aberdeen was a copyright library. Where appropriate PhD students will also be given the opportunity to gain teaching experience by undertaking tutorial teaching (pre-honours), and to participate in a variety of training programmes and workshops.
