Overview

The School of Language & Literature provides supervision for research, leading to the degrees of M Litt and PhD, within a stimulating research atmosphere at both School and College level.

Research students are generally offered the opportunity to undertake a small amount of teaching. An induction course on undertaking research in the Humanities is held at the beginning of each academic year.

Recent postgraduates have worked on theses on contemporary German politics, aspects of contemporary German literature and film, and linguistics.

Advice for Applying

First of all you will need some idea of your area of research. In all applications a 300 word research plan is, though not absolutely necessary, very welcome: ideally this should indicate what you want to study, and why it's worth doing. It may be worth communicating (by letter, phone or email) with the member of staff whose research interests correspond to yours, and discussing your research interests. This can lead to a much sharper sense of direction.

All applications (except those from Aberdeen finalists) require two references. These should be two academics familiar with your work. It can speed up the processing of your application if you get your referees to write directly to the postgraduate officer (address supplied below).

When you fill out an application form (if you don't already have one, order one by one of the means detailed below), please give as much contact information as possible - telephone numbers and email addresses can be useful. There is no definite closing date for applications but early applications are encouraged.
