The Knight and the Lion

"The Joyful Horn"

All this time, Yvain was waiting beyond the wall of mist. Although Erec had told him to go to Brandigant where he would be made welcome and perhaps learn the way to the magic Spring, Yvain preferred to stay, in case his friend should need him.

When he hears the clear note of the horn, Yvain is full of joy. The mist has vanished and through the trees Erec comes riding towards him with Mabonagrain and his lady at his side.

The lady does not look too pleased as they ride towards the town, but all the people come out to greet them, rejoicing and singing. As they enter the castle, Erec's wife rushes to meet him and he hugs and kisses her in great delight. The ladies of the court make up a song called the Lay of Joy in honour of the occasion.

King Evrain welcomes Yvain, but Yvain cannot stay to join in the celebrations, which will go on for more than a week. He is impatient now to be off in search of the Spring and his own adventure. No-one there knows for sure where the Spring is to be found, though some think they have heard of it, but they set him on the path and accompany him a little way, still dancing and singing.
