The chosen book for the 2017-18 reading group is Dementia: Living in the Memories of God, written by Rev Prof John Swinton. Last year it was awarded The Michael Ramsey Prize for theological writing.

Presenting the award at the Greenbelt Festival the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, said that John’s work ‘goes straight to the heart of tackling one of the most profound failures of our society – the failure to value people in other than economic terms and to see the dignity of the human person.’ He added that Dementia discusses ‘an issue that has touched many of us, and is one of the great issues of our society. He has done the church and our country a huge service.’

Upon receiving the prize, John said, ‘My hope is that this book helps us to recognise that in the Kingdom of God everything looks different. Even in something as apparently hopeless as dementia you can find possibilities, because God is a God who never forgets us, who says "I will always be with you, I will always be for you in all things at all times."'

Meanwhile John’s work has received high praise from others. Derek Keck, from Hampden-Syndney College has said, ‘This vigorous yet gentle book is changing the way I practice theology…it challenges fundamental habits of thought, prayer and services…(it) provides hope’. Elizabeth MacKinlay, from Charles Sturt University, wrote ‘This ground-breaking book tells a counter-story of dementia that brings hope and challenges the fears that are so dominant within society and the church.’
