Research

Research Interests

In the most general terms, my research focuses on central issues in Christian dogmatics and on the more recent history of Christian theology in the West. I have a particular interest in the doctrine of scripture and in the transformation of that doctrine in modern theology. I also have an ongoing interest in the theology of Karl Barth: Following on from earlier work on Barth's theology of scriptural interpretation, I currently am working particularly on Barth's writing from the 1920s, looking at his exegetical and historical work, as well as some neglected themes in his dogmatics.

Teaching

Teaching Responsibilities

I currently offer an introductory course in Christian doctrine as well as seminars on creation and eschatology and on the doctrine of scripture. I lead a postgraduate seminar on the use of the Bible in Christian theology.

In recent years, I have taught a module on the nature and authority of scripture in the Reformed tradition as part of the Aberdeen/Pittsburgh Theological Seminary DMin programme. And I have coordinated and/or taught on several other undergraduate courses, including seminars on Scottish theology, modern Christian doctrine, and christology and soteriology.
