Biography

Sian is undertaking a CDA PhD project begun in October 2021, funded by SGSAH, and in partnership with Imaginate (Edinburgh) whose flagship event is the annual Edinburgh International Children's Festival. The project will explore the ways in which children value and process the experience of theatre and dance as audience members, and how this fits within a wider picture of the valuing of young audiences. Aligned with this is the investigation of ways in which both can be meaningfully understood and evidenced: maintaining the verisimilitude of the child’s responses whilst communicating this effectively and usefully to funders, policy-makers and the academy.

Before starting this research, Sian worked in theatre and dance as a stage and production manager, specialising in small-scale touring and children's theatre. She completed an MLitt in Theatre Studies at the University of Glasgow, graduating with distinction in 2021, which built upon knowledge and enthusiasm gained from the same institution during her undergraduate degree (MA Theatre Studies & English, 1998).
