The mackerel burger recipe is one of many tasty recipes to help volunteers easily include mackerel in their diet. Accompany with green salad and tartare sauce.

mackerel burger


  • 1 canned mackerel
  • 100 g fresh spinach
  • 1 spring onions, finely chopped
  • ½ onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp olive oil


  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 egg
  • 5 tbsp bread crumbs
  • Flour for dusting


  1. Heat oven to 200°C / 400°F.
  2. Fry the onion and spring onion in the olive oil for 2 minutes until soft. Leave to cool.
  3. Mix spinach, lemon zest and mackerel flakes.
  4. Once the onions are cool add these to the bowl and mix in the egg and the breadcrumbs.
  5. Lightly flour your work surface and divide the mixture into 2 balls, forming them into burger patties.
  6. Place them on a baking sheet and bake until brown.
  7. Serve in a soft bun with crisp lettuce with tartare sauce (optional).
