Gas Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (GIRMS)

Gas Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (GIRMS)

These instruments are used in a range of metabolic studies using stable isotopes (13C, 18O & Deuterium) and are capable of high levels of precision at low levels of isotopic incorporation.

The section has an Elementar precisION mass spectrometer with the capability of running breath analysis using an iso FLOW and GC-IRMS analysis using a GC-5 and Agilent 7890B GC.

Established methods are routinely used with the opportunity to develop new techniques based on research demands.

Facilities support research in:

  • Breath analysis
  • Fatty acid metabolism
  • Cholesterol analysis
