Millennials and Gen Z are eating and talking about food differently, and that includes seafood! Recent trends such as tinned fish date night and sardine girl summer show the creative and fun ways that TikTok creators are advancing seafood awareness and literacy.
The ‘From Sea to Screen’ project explored how shellfish and tinned fish are portrayed across TikTok and the results were both fascinating…

Hi Caitlin, what can you tell us about the work you're doing?
A common feature of menopause is weight gain, and in particular gaining belly fat. I’m doing a research project at the Rowett Institute – one of the leading research centres in the world for nutrition and health – to study this. Specifically, over the last month I have been investigating why menopause causes a shift…

However, it was also announced that the food inflation figure for January represented the first monthly fall in food prices since 2021 (BBC, 2024). This is very good news as food has been one of the leading sectors contributing to the higher-to-the-target overall price inflation. However, it is better to have a view of annual levels of inflation instead of monthly due to the presence of seasonality. Figure 1 above…

Seafood is an important source of lean protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. Greenhouse gas emissions linked to fish production are significantly lower than those related to red meat and pork production. The seafood industry in Scotland holds significant economic importance by generating employment, driving exports, supporting regional development, and contributing to the nation's trade balance and coastal communities' livelihoods. Yet, most people in Scotland only eat around half of the recommended amount of seafood.

It also represents the only animal-derived source of omega-3 fatty acids found to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. It also has a low carbon footprint- in fact, most seafood provides more nutrients at lower emissions than land-based proteins.
Despite their environmental and health benefits, seafood is often an overlooked component in UK shopping baskets. Similar to fruit and vegetables, there is a dietary guideline for fish consumption;…

Many of us want to eat a healthier and more sustainable diet and eating more fish is often one option recommended.
However, SEFARI research carried out by the Rowett Institute has identified that, across Europe, dietary recommendations for fish consumption do not necessarily match national seafood supplies.

We all know that eating fish is good for health. Fish represents a great source of lean protein, unique omega- 3 fatty acids and bioavailable micronutrients which are often lacking in plant-based diets. In addition, fish offers an alternative animal-based product with a lower environmental footprint.
