Computing scientists at the University have transformed how information is communicated in industries including healthcare, oil & gas, and weather forecasting through the development of pioneering technology.
Natural Language Generation is software which automatically converts complex data into simple, plain English text summaries.
Its intent is to improve efficiency, facilitate planning and decision making and save time and costs across industries where large and complex data sets are key.
The software has the capacity to:
- Create text reports on the medical condition of babies in neonatal care, which support medical professionals making decisions on treatment and can be easily understood by infants’ parents
- Be employed within the oil and gas industries to simplify sensor data from gas turbines for maintenance engineers, and to create marine weather forecasts to allow oil companies to make operational decisions on offshore oilrigs
- To generate simple weather forecasts from numerical data to advise road maintenance engineers on where and when roads need to be gritted
- To generate summaries of statistical data for blind users who cannot see maps and tables
