Iraqi Ambassador visits University of Aberdeen for ISIS discussion event

The Iraqi Consul General, Ambassador Zaid Noori, was among the speakers at a discussion event on ISIS that was recently hosted by the University of Aberdeen's Legal Research Society.

The discussion – ‘The Campaign to Counter ISIS: Legal, Political and Strategic Perspectives’ – took place at the School of Law, based at the University’s King’s College campus.

As the principal speaker, Ambassador Noori spoke about the military situation in Iraq and the support provided by the international community to defeat ISIS, as well as his government’s support to those who have been displaced as a result of the conflict.

The audience of 400 also heard contributions from James Wyllie, Reader in International Relations at the University, as well as Mohamad Janaby, a PhD researcher in law who also helped organise the event with the Legal Research Society.

Reflecting on the event, Buba Bojang, President of the Society, said: “We were delighted to welcome Ambassador Noori to Aberdeen, and to hear his observations on the situation in Iraq and how his Government is dealing with the threat posed by ISIS.

“There was a fantastic turnout for the event, and all of the speakers made interesting and informative contributions that provided the audience with a greater understanding of what is a hugely complex issue.

“I would like to thank all of those who attended and who were involved in helping to organise this evening, and I look forward to our next discussion.”

Anne-Michelle Slater, Head of the School of Law at the University, said: “The Legal Research Society deserve credit for organising and hosting this topical and important discussion, the quality of which was underlined by the fact that every seat in the lecture theatre was filled.

“The impressive turnout was a testament to the quality and stature of the speakers, as well as the questions asked by those who attended, and I’d like to congratulate all those involved in making this event such a success.”
