Job Description

The Vice Dean is the senior University of Aberdeen role within the Institute. The Vice Dean will be expected to lead the Institute in collaboration with the SCNU leads. This includes shaping the strategic direction of the Institute, contributing constructively to the relationship with our SCNU partners, and managing ongoing operations. The Vice Dean will act as line manager for University of Aberdeen Computing Science staff within the Institute. They will also be responsible, in conjunction with Business School managers, for ensuring that Business School staff within the Institute are appropriately managed and supported.

The Vice Dean will be expected to conduct internationally significant research. They will be expected to teach at least one computing science module per year within the Institute using, as appropriate, lectures, laboratory classes and tutorials. 

Appointees will primarily be based in Aberdeen, but will be expected to travel to China to deliver aspects of their administrative and teaching obligations. The Vice Dean will make a number of trips to China each year, spending approximately four months per year there in total, subject to current travel advice from the University.

Applicants should have research expertise in Artificial Intelligence or a closely related area of Computing Science, and have the ambition to work across disciplines and with industry to achieve their research vision as part of the Aberdeen 2040 ‘Data & Artificial Intelligence’ challenge.

Candidates whose work is applicable to domains such as cybersecurity, energy, agri-food and healthcare, or who undertake research related to machine learning, explanation, human/machine collaboration, multi-agent systems or natural language technologies are particularly encouraged to apply. Successful applicants are expected to strengthen the School’s expertise in these areas.

The appointment will be at the appropriate point on the salary scale for Reader (Grade 8: £53,348 - £60,022 per annum), with placement on the scale negotiable according to qualifications and experience, or Professor (Grade 9: negotiable according to qualifications and experience).
