The Department of Chemistry is looking to appoint a Teaching Fellow for an 11 month fixed period to be involved with our taught degree programmes.  The successful candidate will have a PhD in Chemistry or in a closely related discipline, and expertise in the areas of inorganic and materials chemistry. Applicants should have experience in higher education teaching including lectures, experience of running and coordinating undergraduate teaching laboratories, and in running tutorials.  Due to the move towards online teaching methods an aptitude in this area would also be highly desirable.

Job Description

This post is based in the Department of Chemistry within the School of Natural and Computing Sciences on the Old Aberdeen campus.  The Department of Chemistry is a medium-sized department with 16 academic staff, 28 postdoctoral research fellows and 53 PhD students, supported by 7 technical staff and the School office. Research is based around three themes: Functional Materials, Biomolecular Chemistry and Energy & Environment.

Teaching in Chemistry involves undergraduate 4-year BSc (Hons) and 5-year MChem programmes, taught MSc programmes in Environmental Analytical Chemistry and Industrial Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and the service teaching of Chemistry into other programmes at both undergraduate and taught MSc levels. The Department has, in recent years, graduated 20-30 Chemistry students per year, with total undergraduate FTE numbers of around 220.

You will have a PhD in Chemistry or a closely related discipline, and be able to demonstrate that you are an enthusiastic and passionate communicator. You will demonstrate experience at public engagement and presentation skills, and evidence of teaching / demonstrating at undergraduate and / or postgraduate level.

Effective and innovative teaching, together with a student friendly approachable personality are key aspects of the post

Salary will be paid at the rate of £33,797 pro rata per annum on the Grade 6 salary scale.

As this post is to cover a period of Teaching, it will be available for 11 months.

This role is based in the UK and as such the successful candidate will be required to live and work in the UK.
