Lecturer (Scholarship) in Archaeology, Geosciences (GEO392A)

Part of the School of Geosciences, the Department of Archaeology at Aberdeen is seeking support to deliver a wide-ranging Archaeology programme through the appointment of a Lecturer in Archaeology appointment. The position will replace Dr Rick Knecht who has been awarded a prestigious Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship and will be on sabbatical for the duration of the appointment from Autumn 2020 for a period three years. Applications are welcome from individuals with experience in teaching Archaeology, and who are ideally a specialist in the archaeology of northern regions, in fitting with our departmental ‘Archaeology of the North’ profile. Applications from candidates with an Arctic focus are particularly encouraged, aligning with Dr Knecht’s specialisms. Applications that demonstrate a practical fieldwork and/or lab-based element to their profile would also be desirable. The main responsibilities for the new Lecturer will include developing and delivering high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Candidates should be experienced at communicating to a variety of different audiences, be able to work as part of a team, and be willing to work collaboratively with colleagues in Archaeology and other disciplines in the School and University.

The successful candidate will join a department of leading archaeologists who work in Northern Europe, Scandinavia, the North Atlantic and high latitude regions from

Mongolia to North America. At the last REF (2014) the department was ranked No.1 in Scotland for research. You will be expected to contribute to the general teaching and research culture of the department. In light of our department’s commitment to community-centred research and public engagement, experience working with diverse communication, dissemination and outreach styles is also desirable.

Applicants should have a PhD in Archaeology or in a closely allied subject with strong archaeological focus (e.g. Anthropology). Excellent communication and presentation skills that can inspire students should also be demonstrated. They should have a body of high-quality research publications that can support research-led teaching. Experience in teaching archaeology at university level is preferred though equivalent professional experience will also be welcomed. The successful candidate will also be expected to effectively undertake some Departmental administrative responsibilities and to supervise the work of others (e.g. MSc students).

The main responsibilities for the new Lecturer will include developing and delivering high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching modules. Further responsibilities will include teaching archaeology as part of our team-taught undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The successful candidate will also be expected to effectively undertake Departmental administrative responsibilities and supervise the work of others (e.g. MSc project students). Excellent communication and presentation skills that can inspire students, colleagues and members of the public should also be demonstrated.

Salary will be paid at the rate of £41,526 per annum pro rata, the first point on Grade 7 of the University salary scale. Select Grade

As this post is intended to provide teaching replacement for the Leverhulme Trust Major Fellowship of Dr Knecht, it will be offered for a period of three years. Appointments are made subject to the Leverhulme Trust’s agreement.
