The School of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer or Lecturer in Decommissioning to perform interdisciplinary research in the engineering fundamentals that underpin decommissioning and late-life asset managements in the oil & gas sector. In addition, the new staff member is expected to be a major contributor in the university’s taught MSc Program in Decommissioning, the first of its kind globally.

We require research & development experience in one or more main areas associated to decommissioning and late-life such as subsea structural engineering, flow assurance, well plugging and abandonment and enhanced oil/gas recovery. This is a unique opportunity to – in close interaction with the OGTC and a newly to be appointed Chair – shape an emerging interdisciplinary branch of engineering that will play a major role in the energy transition. 

We are looking for an industrially oriented academic, or an academically oriented individual from industry with a PhD degree in a relevant engineering discipline. The successful candidate is experienced in research & development and has an excellent track record in research and technology development witnessed through e.g. papers or patents. Experience with commercialization of research and development is highly desirable, as is a chartered engineer (CEng) status.

For appointments at Lecturer level, salary will be at the appropriate point on the Grade 7 salary scale (£40,792 - £48,676 per annum). For appointment made at Senior Lecturer level, salary will be at the appropriate point on Grade 8 salary scale (£51,630 - £58,089 per annum)  and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.
