Job Description

The clinical service is highly developed with RCOG subspecialty recognition in Reproductive Medicine.  There is an extensive research programme, both basic and applied Reproductive Sciences.  This post is tenable for two years in the first instance, and would suit an individual who has completed year 5 of Specialist Training, including MRCOG, which is essential.

Clinical responsibilities as Research Fellow will include the management of patients undergoing IVF treatment (650 cycles per year). Experience will be gained in the areas of cryopreservation cycles, gamete donation and surgical sperm aspiration. You will be responsible for clinical procedures including, HyCoSy, controlled ovarian stimulation; ultrasound scanning for follicular monitoring, oocyte recovery and embryo transfers. The Unit provides a seven day a week service and you will share the cover with your colleagues. You will also have duties in the secondary care Fertility Clinic in the Aberdeen Fertility Centre. Care will also be required in the management of patients with early pregnancy problems and complications of treatment.


You will be expected to participate as appropriate in teaching programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.


Active research programmes exist in reproductive medicine and as such you should have a demonstrable interest in research. There will be dedicated time for research in the weekly timetable for which one to one supervision will be provided. All research will comply with Aberdeen University Guidelines on Research Governance. In collaboration with your research supervisor you will be expected to adhere to timetables and the supervisor will maintain records of performance in this regard. In addition attendance at meetings will be encouraged and in time you will be required to present you research at national and international meetings. 

Applicants should hold the MRCOG or equivalent and be eligible for Specialist Registrar Status.  A National Training Number is not available for this post; however the appointee will have appropriate honorary specialist registrar status with NHS Grampian and can contribute to the clinical work of the Section.  

Salary will be at the appropriate point on the Clinical Scale for Academics below level of Consultant,  £35,958 – £63,597 per annum and negotiable with placement according to qualifications and experience.
