Renowned theologian to deliver 2018 Gifford Lectures

A renowned theologian is set to deliver a series of lectures that will propose a re-examination of history to help us better understand the nature of Christianity and its mission in the modern world.

Professor NT Wright, from the University of St Andrews, will deliver the Gifford Lectures 2018 at the University of Aberdeen.

The series of eight lectures will take place twice weekly (Mondays and Wednesdays at 6pm), from Monday February 12th to Wednesday March 7th.

Professor Wright’s lectures – entitled ‘Discerning the Dawn– History, Eschatology and New Creation’ – will throw a spotlight on fundamental questions of faith and belief in God, looking at how a renewed examination of history can help reaffirm the role of Christianity in the modern world.

He said: “Widely shared cultural and philosophical presumptions have conditioned our understanding of history, but could better historical study from ancient Jewish and Christian traditions help us reconsider fundamental questions about our understanding of God?

“It’s my belief that it can, and through these lectures I will develop a distinctive approach to natural theology that arises from reflection upon the significance of the ancient concept of the 'new creation’ to help us understand the reality of the world and the reality of God in relation to one another.”
