Course Overview

This course will build on knowledge and techiques studied and assimilated in earlier composition modules in order to create substantial, original new creations. Students will be required to assimilate new techniques and work them into their own emerging musical language for the assessment procedures. Students will be required to regularly critique existing works using these techniques and this will form part of the formative assessments.​

Course Description

This two semester course will carry on the compositional trajectory begun in the first year with 'Introduction to Contemporary Composition' and build on the developments espoused in Composition I & II in the second year. It will look at key works from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, and look in detail at the techniques used. Students will be required to assimilate these techniques and work them into their own emerging musical language for the assessment procedures. Students will be required to regularly critique existing works using these techniques and this will form part of the formative assessments. Key works may include some of the following: Variations for Orchestra (Schoenberg); Quartet for the End of Time (Messiaen); String Quartet No. 2 (Carter); String Quartet (LutosÅ‚awski); Image, Reflection, Shadow (Maxwell Davies); Three Pieces in Old Style (Górecki) and Kiss on Wood (MacMillan).

Oral feedback on work in composition lectures and tutorials. Written feedback on portfolio. Constant feedback on listening on a weekly basis. Students can obtain face to face feedback on compositions from course-coordinator during Office Hours.
