Course Description

Nationalism has been the driving force of politics since the 18th century. It spread across the world like wildfire, leading to a great impact on stability and war in different parts of the world. In this course, students will learn about the “imitation game” of non-Western nationalism in their attempt to create a Western-like indigenous nationalism. This imitation later became a reaction to European colonialism in Turkey, the Arab World, the Balkans, South and East Asia, and Scotland as a peculiar case of civic nationalism. The course is designed to introduce students to these forms of nationalism and the political dynamic not only at the level of international relations but also domestically. Because the majority of states in the world are heterogeneous, nationalism meant that some communities had to stay outside of the national projects. Hence, the dangerous path of nationalism that led to instability and civil wars.
