Course Overview

  •  This course presents advanced in-depth insight into the molecular causes of cancer and into stem cell biology; 
  • The course will present fundamental information to understand the molecular basis of cancer along with models describing disease progression;
  • You will learn how stem cells, a cell type critical for development and function, differ from normal somatic cells;
  • Based on this biochemical understanding of disease progression practical applications in healthcare will be discussed where appropriate; 
  • The course will prepare you with the abilities to understand the biochemical complexities of human disease.

Course Description

Course Aims: The aim of this course is to provide an in-depth understanding of selected aspects in Biochemistry.

Main Learning Outcomes: Students will gain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of biochemical processes causing cancer and into stem cell biology. Students will get a better understanding of the scientific process by critically engaging with primary research literature. Subject-specific knowledge will be enhanced by independent research and a tutorial.

Content: The course will cover cancer causing processes and selected aspects of stem cell biology. This is complemented by tutorials that introduce other topical aspects in biochemistry.
