This course is a compulsory course on the LLB with English Law degree introducing students to English Criminal Law including its sources and current law. It examines various aspects of substantive law including offences against the person, offences of dishonesty, offences against property and criminal defences enabling students to understand and apply the law in these areas. The course also develops student’s written, verbal and analytical skills utilising written course work and problem solving in tutorial groups.

The course introduces students to key aspects of English criminal law including the notion and anatomy of crimes and the essential elements of the major common and statutory law crimes. The course concentrates on substantive issues of English criminal law including crimes against the person, property, inchoate crimes, and appropriate defences.

Practice exam questions are discussed in a lecture and students attaining a mark of 5 or less in that exam are invited to attend a meeting to discuss their mark and any difficulties they may be encountering. Students who fail have the option to go over their first paper prior to the resit. Students may contact staff at any time on issues related to the course. Feedback also occurs on an on-going basis in the form of tutors' comments on students' contributions in tutorials. |
