This course offers an introduction to some of the key methodologies, concepts and critical debates that inform art-historical interpretation. The course surveys a range of approaches and debates relevant to the state of the field, and provides an introduction to the methodological and thematic concerns of current art historical research.
The aim of the course is to hone students’ skills in critical thinking and intellectual debate, enabling them to critically evaluate art historical literature and to situate relevant methods and approaches in the broader field of the humanities. Though primarily theoretical in its outlook, the course connects with other art history courses; discussion will focus on the practical applicability of different methodologies for the study of individual artworks, as well as their implications and limitations.
