Course Description

Course Aims

To provide students with the competence and versatility in instrumental and vocal skills which will enable them to perform effectively as professional musicians;
to contribute significantly to students' personal, musical and professional development by expanding their creative, artistic and aesthetic potential;
to further students' personal development by encouraging high standards of accomplishment in performance.

Main Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students will be able to:

- demonstrate a range of instrumental and vocal techniques
- perform music to a high standard in solo and ensemble contexts
- demonstrate continuing expansion of their artistic and aesthetic potential

Where students are studying more than one instrument/voice, they can elect in advance to have them equally weighted, or weighted in the proportion 70% (main instrument) and 30% (second instrument) for purposes of assessment.

Further Information & Notes

All students on the BMus Ed or BMus MusCom programmes are strongly advised to undertake additional study in piano. The focus of these piano sessions will be on the development of relevant vocational skills.

Students must have achieved a CGS award of C3 or higher in year 1 in order to be able to progress to this course in year 2.

Students select the pieces they work on in negotiation with their instrumental/voice tutor. Alongside instrumental and vocal lessons students are required to join one of the department's many ensembles working in weekly rehearsals towards high quality public performances. As part of this course students are required to attend concerts from the Music Department Concert Series. The course is assessed through a 15 minute recital at the end of the course and a tutor report.
