Course Overview

  • a course detailing how microbial pathogenesis has evolved, and the nature of pathogenicity factors in bacterial and fungal pathogens;
  • a course in which lecture material is supported by bioinformatic workshops and individual presentations – your chance to team-work, problem-solve and ask questions; 
  • contains an bioinformatic research practical in which you study the genome structure of pairs of bacterial species, a pathogen, and a closely-related non-pathogen. This includes a presentation workshop where you will describe the outcome of your genome analysis and literature research; 
  • incorporates lectures detailing the evolution of fungal and bacterial pathogenicity factors, and their diagnosis in the hospital laboratory

Course Description

Course Aims: The aim of this course - Microbiology Option 1 - is to provide insight into microbial genomics and genetics of microbial pathogens and other microorganisms, led by a study of the primary literature in this field. Main Learning Outcomes: In Microbiology Option 1 -, students will gain knowledge and achieve an understanding into microbial physiology and genomics. They will learn how to different aspects of the biology of microorganisms impact on human health and microbial survival, as well as the molecular mechanisms underpinning evolution of pathogenic character. Content: Microbial physiology and genomics; microbial pathogenicity factors; mechanisms of genome evolution. Additional insight into fundamental aspects of Microbiology will be achieved by independently researching and writing a literature review essay.

1st Attempt: 1 two-hour written paper (70%), in-course assessment (30%) consisting of a written essay style assessment.
