Course Aims: The aim of this course - Microbiology Option 2 - is to provide insight into microbial genetics and biochemistry, led by a study of the primary literature in this field. Main Learning Outcomes: In Microbiology Option 2 -, students will gain knowledge and achieve an understanding of the processes of microbial growth and development, and their impacts on the interaction of the microbe with its environment, including the human host. Content: The growth and colonisation of fungi and bacteria of their environmental niches; study of the biochemistry, physiology and pathology of a range of microbial species. Additional insight into fundamental aspects of Microbiology will be achieved by independently researching and writing a literature review essay.

1st Attempt: 1 two-hour written paper (70%), in-course assessment consisting of one essay (2000 words) (30%). Resit: 1 three-hour written paper (75%), plus previous in-course assessment essay (2000 words) (25%).
