Course Overview

  • students will extend from their "textbook" knowledge in basic Immunology to frontline research into areas such as the specific mechanisms that successfully eliminate different types of infectious agent, and the cells and molecules that prevent autoimmune diseases;
  • students will understand how pathogens are able to evade our immune system and the current strategies and challenges in immunotherapeutic and vaccine development for these pathogens; 
  • research tutorials help students to acquire further knowledge in a specialist subject in Immunology and develop their reading, writing, numeracy, communication and critical analysis skills that are attractive to employers in academia and industry.

Course Description

Course Aims: The aim of this course is to provide an in-depth understanding of selected aspects of Immunology as related to infection and disease. Main Learning Outcomes: * Understanding of the complex cellular and molecular processes underlying the innate and adaptive immune response to infection. * Understanding of how tolerance to non-infectious or self antigens can be broken to induce autoimmunity or allergy, and why failure of normal immune regulatory mechanisms can cause chronic inflammation. * An appreciation of how pathogens evade detection and elimination by the immune system and cause disease. * An understanding of the scientific process. Content: The course provides up-to-date knowledge and explanation of current key topics in immunology related to infection and disease. This will give students a good understanding of the processes underlying immunity and response to infection as well as the disease processes associated with loss of tolerance to non-infectious or self antigens, and loss of regulation. Subject specific research tutorials using primary literature will enhance knowledge and give students an appreciation of the scientific process and the ability to address this critically. Independent research will be required to complement the tutorials and for essay preparation.

Teaching Breakdown


1st Attempt: 1 two-hour written paper (70%) and in-course assessment consisting of one 2000 written research feature (30%). Resit: 1 three-hour written paper (75%) and previous continuous assessment (25%).
