Course Overview

This course is organised around a series of tutor-led class visits to sites of special art historical significance. The class will visit key locations in and around Aberdeen, and there is also a trip to Edinburgh. A range of important works of art and architecture will be studied in situ, and this study will be supported by staff lectures on related topics. The material on the course will be organised in relation to broad themes that will introduce students to major issues in the discipline of art history.  Download Course Guide

Course Description

This course is organised around a series of tutor-led class visits to sites of special art historical significance. The class will visit key locations in and around Aberdeen, and there is also a day-long class visit to Edinburgh. A range of important works of art and architecture will be studied in situ, and this study will be supported by staff lectures/seminars on related topics. The material on the course will be organised in relation to broad themes that will enable students to develop and refine their understanding of major issues in the discipline of art history.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 31 August 2023 for 1st half-session courses and 22 December 2023 for 2nd half-session courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 one-hour visual-based written examination (50%), continuous assessment (40%), fieldtrip attendance and participation (10%). Continuous assessment consists of 1 essay of 1500 words. Resit: 1 two-hour visual-based written examination (100%); all outstanding course work must have been submitted.

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment will be provided through verbal engagement with the team of tutors and with peers, and through written feedback provided by essay marking.
