Course Overview

A combination of three  lectures per weeks and five fortnightly practical classes covering a broad range of topics in marine biology.

The course is taught by a range of lecturers who specialise in a wide variety of research areas.

One written essay from a wide choice of topics to demonstrate ability for critical thinking and research skills.

Specialised lectures on essay writing skills, both pre- and post-essay coursework, are provided to enhance writing skills.

Course Description

The course begins with an overview of oceanographic processes as well as marine food-webs and key marine species. A variety of global marine ecosystems are then discussed including sandy shores, rocky shores, deep sea, hydrothermal vents, kelp beds and coral reefs. Lectures are given on current research on marine biology, with a specific focus on the impacts of man on the marine environment (e.g. climate change).

Course practicals require the use of a lab coat which can be purchased locally for £15

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 31 August 2023 for 1st half-session courses and 22 December 2023 for 2nd half-session courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: One 2-hr examination (30% written; 20% MCQ); in-course assessment of laboratory work plus one essay (50%).

Resit: Resit examinations in the same format as the main examinations along with new in-course assessment reflecting the course learning outcomes.

Formative Assessment

Essay feedback and revision sessions.

Feedback

Extensive written feedback is given for every practical report handed in as well as for the essay. Further to this, there is an essay feedback session where generic comments are given to the class.
