Course Overview

This course is a year-long (two semesters) course that provides a broad range substantive, methodological, and professional training for first year PGR students. The teaching goal of the course is to provide first-year PGR students with a range of educational materials and training experiences to better enable successful outcomes in their PGR program.

Course Description

This course provides a sequence of seminars during the two half-sessions. Each seminar is designed to provide a wide range of substantive learning experiences and opportunities to gain practical research skills. During the course, students will assemble a literature survey in alignment with their research project.

At the end of the second half-session, the students will be expected to present the findings of their literature review, to establish that they have gained mastery of that body of literature, and that their proposed research would result in original contributions to legal science.

  • Research Question Workshop: Elevator and Conference Blurbs
  • How to Use Libraries and other Resources of Legal Information
  • How to Structure a Dissertation
  • How to Write in Legal Research
  • Exploring Legal Methodologies
  • How to Develop and Present Research Presentations
  • How to Use Computers and Software to Make Research and Academic Writing Less Stressful
  • Exploring the History of Jurisprudence and Legal Theories
  • Exploring Legal Methodologies
  • How to Get Published: Books, Articles, and Chapters
  • Surviving Citation: The Details of Major Systems (OSCOLA, Blue Book, Etc)
  • Our School of Law: History & Perspective
  • An Introduction to Scots Law and Institutions

 The course will also feature a weekly pastoral session to check on various PGR activities and needs while they progress through the First Year PGR Program to better ensure optimal study progress and health and safety issues.
