Course Overview

This course provides students with a thorough grounding in advanced research skills relevant to all three sub-disciplines (i.e., composition, performance and musicology) and highlights the interrelationships between them.  Students will acquire the skills which will underpin work done for the Extended Project and which will also relate to the Music Research Seminar course.

Course Description

The syllabus will include topics such as those on the following list:
• research proposals and project planning
• archival research
• editing and editions
• programming and recital etiquette
• composition as research
• composition and analysis
• performance as research
• musicology in terms of performance
• digital humanities
• critical theory and music studies
• studying sketches and correspondence
• working with reception history
