The course aims develop practical geological skills applicable to the hydrocarbons industry, embracing the subdisciplines of clastic and carbonate sedimentology, stratigraphy, and diagenesis; it will show how sedimentological and stratigraphic knowledge is crucial in both exploration and development activities, and is fundamental in making predictive models. It will impart a practical knowledge of depositional environments which form hydrocarbon reservoirs, linking these together using the techniques of sequence stratigraphy as applied to siliciclastic and carbonate settings. The origin and effects of reservoir fluids and subsequent diagenesis will also be covered.

The sedimentology will embrace the sub disciplines of clastic and carbonate sedimentology, stratigraphy, diagenesis; it will show how sedimentological and stratigraphic knowledge is crucial in both exploration and development activities, and is fundamental in making predictive models. It will impart a practical knowledge of depositional environments which form hydrocarbon reservoirs, linking these together using the techniques of sequence stratigraphy as applied to siliciclastic and carbonate settings. The origin and effects of reservoir fluids and subsequent diagenesis will also be covered.
The structural geology component will instead looks at Mechanisms of basin formation and their stratigraphic expressions; discuss the Seismic expressions of structural style. It will also introduce the Methods for building and testing structural interpretations in the subsurface with a focus on the Uncertainty;
The Geomechanics module will instead looks at fundamentals of stress and pressure; the concept of Failure, fractures and faults
Rock properties; The practical will focus on the use of geomechanical data sources in the oil & gas industry; Building mechanical earth models; Wellbore stability; Fracture stability
