The course introduces and critically evaluates some of the major concepts in translation theory, focusing on their application to translation practice. It analyses translation as a social and cultural phenomenon. Students will develop the skills necessary to reflect critically on their own translation practice in order to enhance its breadth and sophistication.

This is an online course. All materials will be presented via MyAberdeen. The course lasts for 12 weeks and the content is broken down by week. Each week's unit features content in the form of short recorded lectures or podcasts, written lectures, links to reading and to other content, and questions for discussion. There are three to four tutorial sessions at intervals throughout the course, in which staff and students will interact via MyAberdeen. Students otherwise post content via the journal tool, the discussion board and the blogging tool. Assessment is carried out via MyAberdeen and Turnitin. The content of the course is a crucial introduction to the interdiscipline of Translation Studies, teaching student about the theory that lies behind the craft. Students will be expected to read, digest and synthesise the work of leading scholars in Translation Studies, with a particular focus on the past sixty years. Students will be taught how to use this knowledge to enhance their own critical self-reflection as practising translators.
