Throughout this course students will work independently on a research topic that will have been identified prior to the start of the course, in preparation for the research project carried out in course ZO5902. MSc students will produce a project plan and a literature review on the topic of their research project. PgDip students will produce an assessment on an appropriate topic that will have been identified through discussion with the course coordinator and count towards completion of their degree.

The aim of this course is for students to: 1) produce a literature review on the topic of their research project; and 2) develop a project plan that will constitute part of the project management. The literature review is a critical evaluation of what has been published on a chosen research topic. The review will summarise, synthesise and analyse the arguments and evidence of other researchers on the topic.
The Project Plan is developed in collaboration with project supervisor(s) and gives the specific hypotheses to be addressed in the project, the anticipated methodology and logistics, timetable, budget (if applicable), supervisory arrangements, and safety considerations. Following assessment in course ZO5511, the plan can updated as required for the purposes of effect project management.

Written feedback is given on the assessed literature review and project plan.
