Course Overview

This course will describe and review the use of medicinal compounds in man together with methods to assess and describe efficacy and toxicity. A number of exemplar disease areas and at risk populations will be selected and the drugs used to treat these conditions and populations discussed and explained. The importance of understand drug mechanisms of action and associated risk as well as benefit will be emphasised in a clinical setting. The course will consider both drugs in current use and those in development.

Course Description

This course aims to present the study of drugs by reference to the therapeutic uses of drugs in pathological conditions. The following class of drugs and related treatments will be discussed and explained:

- Beta Adrenoreceptor Antagonists,
- Calcium Channel Antagonists,
- Lip Lowering Agents, Psychotic Illnesses and their treatment,
- Depression and its treatment,
- Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors/Angiotensin Antagonists,
- Antibiotic Drugs used in the treatment of Asthma
-Schizophrenia and its treatment

At the end of the course students should be able to:

- demonstrate an understanding of various aspects of the selected drugs
i.e. their chemistry, pharmacology, medical use, absorption,
distribution, metabolism, and excretion as well as adverse drug
reactions.
describe the classification and types of adverse drug reactions which
may occur
- describe with examples the clinical and economic importance of adverse
drug reactions
- describe clinically important drug-drug interactions from the list of drugs
under study
-explain how factors such as dosage regimes, methods of drug delivery,
physiology, pathology and concomitant drug therapy may exert an effect
on the effectiveness and toxicity of the drugs under study
- have a strategy for discovering and presenting information on a drug
- describe the pharmacology, pharmacodymanics and possible clinical
problems encountered when several drug groups are used in the
treatment of a condition
