This is the second year Gaelic language course for students who are relatively fluent in the language already and have studied it to at least Higher in school (Higher Gaelic or Gàidhlig) or similar level. It follows on from GH1513.

The course aims to enhance students' command of the formal structures of the Gaelic language at morphological and syntactic levels, as well as reinforcing their knowledge of the phonological and orthographic systems within the language.
Main Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will have an advanced command of the formal structures of the Gaelic language. Students will be able to converse fluently on a wide range of topics in a variety of registers and will have command of a range of vocabulary domains. Students will be able to produce extended pieces of writing in Gaelic on a variety of topics and will be able to understand authentic spoken and written language presented to them in a variety of media. This course will help students to prepare for the demands of Gaelic language and literature work at Honours level.
Each week, students will take three one-hour language classes. The formal language work will be designed to increase students' confidence in using higher-register language and will help students to improve their knowledge and understanding of accurate models of morphological and syntactic structures. The extension work will typically include reading texts, translation and writing about a wide range of topics in preparation for Honours study. The oral/aural work will involve natural conversation, discussion, debate, monologue, presentations, etc. in addition to listening to recorded materials, transcription and other exercises designed to improve students' understanding of authentic language.
This course may NOT be included as part of a graduating curriculum with GH2009 or GH2509.

40% in-course assessment: two language exercises (10% each), one 20% essay; and 60% examination.

The above assessments are given CGS marks, and written or verbal feedback is also given. Additional informal feedback on performance is also given in both written language classes and oral classes.
