Course Overview

This course offers students who are registered for the Beginners' course in French language an introduction to twentieth and twenty-first century French culture and society through the study of films, short prose texts and poetry. The course is organised around the broad themes of childhood and adolescence, gender, sexuality and love and marginalisation in contemporary France. The texts will be studied in translation or with subtitles.

Course Description

This course is open to all students with an interest in French literature and culture who are registered for the Beginners' course in French language or have a very basic knowledge of French. Students who take the course may intend to continue with studies in French beyond level 1 but this is not essential. You will learn about a number of the themes and styles of modern French literature and culture and will be able to relate texts to their socio-historical context as well as developing your essay writing skills. The course is designed to suit students who have some experience of studying literature, culture and film and those with no prior knowledge. Teaching will take place in English and written texts will be studied in translation. The texts and their contexts will be introduced in lectures. Tutorials will help you to develop your analytical skills and exchange your ideas in a small group.
