LLM International Commercial Law

This law degree will provide you with a deep understanding of the legal functions required to operate within the rapidly changing international business environment. You will gain insight into specific areas of international commercial law, which will include the regulation of financial and commercial activities within an organisation, as well as international perspectives in company law. 

The LLM in International Commercial Law will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to make you proficient in the complex modern-day international commercial law arena. Throughout this degree you will engage with diverse issues arising across the business and legal spectrum and will develop an enhanced understanding of a specialist area of law.

Getting Started at the University of Aberdeen (PD5006)

This course, which is prescribed for all taught postgraduate students, is studied entirely online, takes approximately 5-6 hours to complete and can be taken in one sitting, or spread across a number of weeks.

Critical Legal Thinking and Scholarship (QL5001)

This compulsory course provides students from diverse legal and educational backgrounds with a common understanding of the core research, analytical, and writing skills which would be required to excel in LLM-Taught courses. It commences with a few lectures and progresses to working  in a workshop environment and finally to the submission of an individual assignment. It also incorporates elements such as library workshops to provide students with hands-on experience with the resources available for course and dissertation work.

Corporate Governance (QL5506)

This course will discuss the trajectory of the development of corporate governance over the past three decades, especially in the UK and the US, with a view to understanding the extent to which underlying theoretical assumptions and policy decisions impact legislative, regulatory and self-regulatory arrangements as well as reform options. Students will gain an understanding of why the company as a legal entity has the shape and form that it does; why certain actors are regarded as internal to corporate governance arrangements and others external; and why ongoing (and sometimes apparently futile) reform efforts take the form that they do.

International Sale of Goods (QL5802)

This course focuses on the difficulties which can arise when the buyer and seller of goods are located in different legal systems: we examine the sources of International Trade Law and the legal issues arising for buyer and seller in an international sale of goods transaction. We consider how to minimise or avoid these difficulties in the following contexts: the Sale of Goods Act 1979 and the CISG; Incoterms and bills of lading; International Documentary Letters of Credit; dispute resolution by litigation and arbitration.

Comparative and International Perspectives on Company Law (QL5007)

This course is a selective and critical examination of company laws. A theoretical approach shall be taken based upon the general theory of comparative law developed by Zweigert and Kötz and the Watsonian theory of legal transplants. Key issues in comparative company law shall be examined using the theoretical framework of Hansmann and Kraakman with its particular focus on the agency problem. Specific topics shall include directors’ duties; the protection of minority shareholders and the limits of limited liability.

This course explores the theoretical and practical underpinnings of arbitral law and provides students with a holistic view on different aspects of the arbitral procedure.

Master of Laws Dissertation (QL5904)

Students prepare a 10,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice related to their specialist LLM programme. Students are instructed through the delivery of a preparatory lecture, two supervisory meetings and a two hour dissertation planning workshops. Students are expected to spend considerable time on independent research throughout the course of the dissertation module, including; preparation of dissertation plan, amendment of plan in accordance with supervisory comments, preparation for the dissertation workshop, and, of course, in the final 10,000 word dissertation itself.

How You'll Study

The programme will be taught on an intensive, block-teaching basis.

Students will be given tasks and readings to complete in advance of a faculty visit, which will comprise of five days of intensive instruction.

Entry Requirements

A first degree in law with a degree classification of 2.1 or above in Law or a related discipline will normally be required for entry to the programme.  In exceptional circumstances, applicants not having a law degree but possessing significant relevant experience may be admitted to the programme.

English Language Requirements

To study for a Postgraduate Taught degree at the University of Aberdeen it is essential that you can speak, understand, read, and write English fluently. 

The minimum requirements for this degree are as follows:

  • The tuition fee is 105,000 QR per programme.
  • Tuition fees are fixed at the point of entry so there is no annual increase for returning students.
