Prize Winner: Duan Wang - Outstanding Thesis - MSc Psychological Studies

After working in a software company for 4 years, I decided to study psychology abroad to achieve my dream. Fortunately, the University of Aberdeen gave me an amazing experience of studying psychology.

The program of MSc Psychological Studies covers almost all basic knowledge of psychology, including psychological assessment, biological psychology, methods and analysis in psychology, memory and psychology, social psychology. Besides, “current topics” give us a view of the newest research direction and the research project gives us a chance to experience the whole process of experiment, data analysis and thesis writing.

I was originally satisfied with the program before the first semester. After the entrance, I found there are many surprises waiting me. PAL is an optional session which can help us in APA referencing, report writing and any particular topic area you need help with. In second semester, many students found it difficult to understand advanced methods and analysis in psychology. The drop-in session, another optional session, gives us a more detailed explanation of all concepts and methods. Besides, there are academic seminars on every Thursday. All these things are barely possible in a Chinese university, so I am very glad that I chose UOA.

Every teacher I met in school of psychology is knowledgeable and amiable. They gave me many useful suggestions about studying and doing research, and encouraged us after the first terrible essay submitting.

I was struggling with finding a job when I received the email which informed me that I have been awarded the Anderson Prize. I could not resist the urge to cry. Because I knew my efforts were rewarded. Then I started missing Aberdeen. I can search help when I have trouble with studying in Aberdeen, but now I need to face many failed applications and interviews without any explanation. This makes me feel helpless sometimes. Anyway, this prize encouraged me, giving me confidence to survive in more interviews. Besides, I added this honour on my CV, hoping it benefits my application.

All in one, I really enjoyed the studying at Aberdeen. If I have a chance in the future, I will study at Aberdeen again.

Duan Wang was an MSc Psychological Studies student during the 2019/20 academic year.
