Manager of Graduate School
My role at the University of Aberdeen is to lead the Researcher Development Team within the Centre for Academic Development. The Researcher Development team support the personal and professional development postgraduate researchers and research staff. I develop and deliver training acitivties for the benefit of researchers and research projects.
I am particularly interested in supporting researchers in developing leadership skills to support career progression in any employment sector.
I have oversight for the strategic direction of the researcher development programmes researchers, and represent the training needs of researchers on internal and external committees and groups.
Working closely with Vice Principals and colleagues across each of the Schools and Administrative Centres, I am responsible for ensuring that training provision complements internal strategies, and is aligned to internal and external agendas.
I am curretnly managing an EPSRC-funded research that project explores and addresses the links between researcher career aspirations, their employability and the skills that employers value when recruiting. We also hope that through this project we will raise awareness amongst employers of the unique skill set that researchers have. This is a joint project between the Centre for Academic Development and the Careers Service.
The two main aims of the project are:
- To understand the skills that underpin enterprise and employability from both employer and researcher perspectives.
- To exploit this knowledge to inform our researcher development and careers provision and to create opportunities for University of Aberdeen researchers to acquire, and further develop, their employability and enterprise skills.
This project links to several institutional and national agendas, including those concerning researcher experience, employability, innovation and entrepreneurship and internationalisation, and aligns with our institutional commitment to developing our people and strengthening links with business, industry and society.
Develop and deliver training courses within the University and for external collaborators developed and delivered professional development modules reflecting requirements, challenges and often complex issues pertaining to the research environment.
Course coordinator Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education: Building a Successful Research Career. This masters level course for early career researchers prepares researchers with the skills and knowledge to strategically plan and develop their career.
Create and deliver a range of innovative and highly well received training courses for postgraduate researchers from all disciplines, in excess of 1000 researchers engaged in a diverse range of topics including leadership, research skills, collaboration and creativity.
